DIY Retro Bluetooth Headset
I first saw this at some overpriced online geek store.
Concept: Hack a normal bluetooth headset into an old corded phone.
How it's Done:
Open the bluetooth headset and remove the unnecesarry plastic bits.
Deciding on how to mod the BT headset was tough. If I could I wanted to keep both the microphone and the speaker from the retro phone because they fit perfectly in the case and would allow me to position the BT headset where ever I wanted. So I did some tests.
The Speaker worked great and had no problems playing music (The CD player from the harddrive speaker project worked pitched in for the testing).
The Microphone however was not som compliant and after some nudging and prodding and soldering I gave up on it (perhaps this was the reason the retro phone was discarded in the first place...) and continued working on the BT headset.
The next tricky bit was the BT speaker. It had 3 wires. I have only heard of speakers with 2 wires so this was kind of a problem (I was not sure at this point if a standard speaker would work...) so I did some more testing and used the multimeter probes to connect the phone speaker to the BT headset while it was on and connected to my cell phone playing music (quite a testing rig! :) I'm a little fuzzy but If I remember correctly one combination played sound very well, one played sound very quiet and one did not work. (perhaps it was some sort of double speaker for high and low frequencies).
in any case I cut the BT speaker and wired it to the phone speaker. Once again tested to make sure I didn't mess anything up and proceeded with the hack, which was straight forward from here:
- wired a button I had lying around in parallel with the single all-purpose button.
- pumped the volume to max on the BT headset
- carefully made a complete mess of the plastic case while trying to make the BT board fit inside
And that's it! quick and easy!
